It looks like it's a Desmond '2-2' this year with Cathays Brass being runners-up in the International Eisteddfod and now in the National Eisteddfod to the ever professional A5 Brass Quintet!
The band beat the preliminary nerves to perform confidently on stage in the splendid Donald Gordon Theatre on the final day of the week long festival, held this year in Cardiff Bay.
For those who are interested you can catch our performance here.
As we welcome them to our City this August, the event is our opportunity to re-pay their hospitality and show them our strong Welsh spirit.
Come and meet their enthusiastic members and help encourage the next stages of our Cities strong relationship by dancing your socks off at Cathays Sports and Social Club on Wednesday August 8th, 7:30pm.
We are charging £3 entry for an evening led by local group Uisge Contraband.
July 5th saw our second appearance at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.
A big congratulations go to this years victors, fellow Welsh entrants BTM: Next Generation, who produced an assured on stage performance which bodes well for the future of brass banding in Wales.
We were exceedingly pleased with our own performance and felt a noticeable progression from the previous year which drove us to continue our enjoyment at the festival. All performances are available to view at this link http://llangollen.tv/ensemble/
This year we also performed on the World stage and on the newly build centenary square on both Thursday and Friday.
Following our centenary square performance on Friday, the scorching weather gave us a quick break for a drink, then we were straight back out to enjoy the International Parade. Still with instruments to hand we ensured no quiet periods for the thousands of spectators as we inspired an impromptu singalong by striking up some traditional Welsh tunes.
Green Token Recognition
We're delighted to announce that we've been chosen to be part of Asda Coryton's Green Token scheme for July, August and September.
This means that when you shop in store over these three months you could additionally be helping us to bring music to Cathays. Just do your shop as normal, then at the checkout pick up the Green Tokens and put them in the Cathays Brass "shoot" on your way out.
The band would really appreciate your support with this, as all the money we receive goes straight into developing our skills and allows us to contribute to community activities.
Cathay's Charity Work Pays Off!
Our thanks goes to the Velindre Cancer Centre Fundraising team who allowed some of our members to visit them today and hand over a cheque for £600, money that we have been raising over the last year.
It was also great to catch one of our members, Carole Mellish, who coincidentally just finished her final ever shift at the centre. The band wishes her and Velindre Cancer Centre all the best for the future!
More info on the great work Velindre do can be found here.

Congratulations In Order
Congratulations to Christchurch United Church (Llanedeyrn) on reaching their 50th year and for marking it so successfully at their Jubilee Concert on Saturday September 2nd. It was a pleasure to be part of such a well run event and to share the stage with the spectacular Dowlais Make Choir was a great musical experience for all our members.
The concert was made extra special by the responsive and engaged audience, who through their generosity on the night were able to raise £964 for local charities!
Llangollen Success 06.07.17
The band have recently taken part in our first International Eistedfodd and were delighted to return as Winners of the Instrumental Ensemble competition. Our programme of Welsh Echoes and All through the Night found favour with the judges as they paid considerable recognition to the well-rehearsed nature of our performance.
The success of the trip continued with an impromptu campsite concert and participation in the notoriously vibrant International Parade through Llangollen town. With thanks to Rondo Media, full recordings of all performances are available here

**NEW EVENTS Christmas 2016
That's right, it's nearly that time of year again! We've just posted a load of Christmas dates up on our events page. So whether it's a bit of pub caroling or a Gilbert and Sullivan concert that takes your fancy, take a look to see where you can catch us out and about this Winter.
Rehearsal cancelled: Monday 29th August
There will be no rehearsal on Monday 29th August as it is a bank holiday and many of our members are away. We will be back on Monday 5th September.
We had a great time playing our first ever competition at The National Eisteddfod in Abergavenny. Despite strong competition from 2 other ensembles, we are pleased to announce that we were awarded first place, with some very positive comments from the adjudicators!
You can listen to our performance here (from the beginning), followed by an interview with first cornet players Tomos and David.
You can also watch our performance here (1:03:10 for the performance and 2:19:30 for the results).
(We recommend the radio recording for better sound quality!)
Cathays set for TV debut!
The National Eisteddfod runs from July 29 – August 6 and gives many diverse ensembles the chance to perform to an unlimited TV (and now online) audience.
In our first ever competition, Cathays Brass has entered the Open Ensemble section at the National Eisteddfod which takes place on Saturday August 6th. The competition is due to start at 10:15 so stay tuned to S4C to hear our efforts.
A live link to the stage is available here.

Easter Monday Rehearsal 28.03.16
Due to members enjoying the bank holiday weekend we will not be rehearsing on Easter Monday.
However, as this was due to be the last rehearsal before our Glanfa stage appearance in the WMC (04.04.16) we will adding an extra rehearsal on Tuesday 29th March instead. 7pm at Cathays Sports and Social Club as usual.
So that's one extra day to practice your parts folks!
Last week (4/01/16) Cathays Brass had our very first AGM!
We heard reports from president Cath, MD Martyn and treasurer Tomos. In electing the committee, Cath Showell, Tomos Evans and Tim Pickles remain in the positions of president, treasurer and secretary respectively, whilst Dan Flew moves to Assets Manager/Librarian and Elen Everett comes on board as publicity officer.
Also on the agenda was a discussion on the direction of the band and our future repertoire, which has got us all excited for a great year of banding ahead!
Notice of AGM 04.01.16
Our first AGM will take place at 8:15pm in the Cathays Sports & Social club.
The Agenda will be as follows...

These include, The London Philharmonic, The Berne Symphony, The City of Prague Philharmonic, The London Symphony and The Royal Choral Society (winning gold and platinum record awards) Of his Brass Band credentials, he has worked with several Championship level Bands including Sovereign Brass, Camborne Town Band, Burry Port Town Band, The Parc & Dare Band and has twice recorded with World, European and British Brass Band Champions, the Black Dyke Mills Band.

As an ensemble we look forward to supporting that absolute statement as we work together to promote music involvement in Cathays.

BANK HOLIDAY CANCELLATION
We have noted there will be be a few absentees for the rehearsal due on the 31st (Bank Holiday Monday) and so we have decided to cancel this rehearsal! Normal service will be resumed on Monday 7th September when we will be cracking on with the repertoire for Brassed Off. Hope to see you there!
All Stop for French Adventure
Good Luck to the 6 members (and MD) of Cathays Brass who will be teaming up with the Vale of Glamorgan Scratch Band as they travel to Fécamp over this coming weekend. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee these players will be back in time for Monday evenings rehearsal – (or indeed of any usefulness to anyone after all that “travelling”) and so due to this probable dent in attendance the rehearsal on 06.07.15 has been cancelled.
We will meet again on the 13.07.15
END OF AN ERA
Last month we received the unfortunate news that St Joseph’s Catholic Sports and Social Club would shortly be unable to continue opening on Monday evenings. A lot of consideration was given to changing our rehearsal night in order to remain at the club and the effects that this would have on our members. It is with some sadness that we felt changing our rehearsal night was not currently an option and so we have looked to secure a new rehearsal venue.
Our next rehearsal on 01.06.15 will take place in Cathays Sports and Social Club on Cathays Terrace (formally the Libs Club.) We hope this will be the first step in a new chapter of the bands history and are looking forward to meeting the club members on Monday.
Both the committee and members of St Josephs have always provided us with a great and supportive atmosphere to make music; from our regular Monday evening rehearsals to hosting our Launch Day back in October. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the club at future events and thank them for the great hospitality shown over the last 9 months.
BANK HOLIDAY CANCELLATION
Last rehearsal our members made the decision to have a break this week and so we will not be meeting as normal tonight. We will however be back rehearsing on June 1st with further important information to be released shortly.
NEW EVENTS ADDED
Find us next when we perform at Christchurch United Church in Llanedeyrn for an evening celebrating the music of the hymn writing pioneer, Ira D Sankey. More information can be found on our events page.
CONCERT IN A DAY CHALLENGE
On Saturday 24th January, Cathays Brass will be teaming up with the Cardiff University Brass Band, to create our first Concert in a Day Challenge! There is an open invitation for any brass or percussion players to come and join us for this musical day as we create and perform a public concert from scratch.
The plan is to rehearse from 10am til’ 3pm, with coffee and lunch breaks, and then re-convene to play the rehearsed repertoire to a keen audience at 7.30pm. Both the rehearsal and concert will take place in the Sanctuary (top floor) of Cathays Methodist Church on Crwys Road.
Musical directors Martin Humphries, Andy Wareham and Elan Higueras have put together an exciting programme but will be keeping this under wraps until the day to keep it a surprise from players and audience alike. However, we can reveal that our guest soloist will be Matt Rowe, solo Euphonium of the Tongwynlais Temperance Band.
We will also be joined by local Welsh-speaking choir Aelwyd y Waun Ddyfal, who are conducted by Cardiff University Music student Steffan Hughes.
The band are very pleased to say that Domino's pizza have kindly sponsored our lunch break to keep all the musicians well sustained throughout the day!
We suggest that players arrive at the church at 9.30am (though it will be open from 8am for anyone super keen) for a pre-rehearsal cuppa, biscuit and chat. The baton will go down at 10am.
There is no need to register but in the interests of having enough pizza (and chairs/stands), please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, instrument and any dietary and/or mobility requirements (using ‘Concert in a Day’ as the subject). Dress for the concert will be all black (for players, not the audience).
For those who just want to come and watch, the concert will be FREE! With a retiring collection for The Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Charity, who support the new Children’s Hospital for Wales in Cardiff.
We look forward to seeing you there.
MUSICAL DIRECTOR ANNOUNCEMENT
After successfully helping the band through its first term of rehearsals, Cathays Brass can now announce that Martin Humphries is to take on the role of Musical Director with the band.
Martin is familiar to many students in Cathays as conductor of the Cardiff University Brass Band (2010-2013) where he was the inaugural recipient of the 'Best Student Conductor' award at the National University Brass Band Championships of Great Britain (2013).He recently completed a Masters degree in composition at Cardiff University and amongst his research interests he lists both music in the community, and the largely overlooked repertoire of the brass band in the 21st-Century.
Saturday January 24th will see Martin make his conducting debut with Cathays Brass as he leads our first “Concert In A Day Challenge” (more information to follow shortly!) alongside the Cardiff University Brass Band in a day initiated by his enthusiasm for collaboration and innovation. We look forward to both this day and a positive future for the band.
