Latest News / Newyddion DiweddarafAnnouncing our 10 Year Anniversary Party!!!Lyric Competition 2024Full details can be found hereNew Year RehearsalsNew Musical DirectorCathays Brass are thrilled to announce the appointment of our new Musical Director Jack Millier.
Jack is a conductor, composer and arranger from Somerset, who is currently a Composition student at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He is active in the musical theatre scene in Somerset as an MD and arranger for numerous adult and youth groups, and is currently Musical Director for the RWCMD production of ‘A Christmas Carol’. Despite being on the composition course, he is closely linked with the brass department, working extensively with chamber groups including the symphonic brass dectet. He is the founder and conductor of the 'Sitzprobe Orchestra’, who meet regularly to play through MT rep, giving keen players and singers a chance to experience wider repertoire and get accustomed to the scores and styles they might face in professional pit work. Alongside his creative work, Jack teaches at a secondary school in Somerset, designing and delivering a music access scheme for students, and is a Trustee of 'In Charley’s Memory’, overseeing outreach projects and youth engagement. Having depped as a conductor and assistant MD for numerous brass bands locally and at home in Somerset, he can’t wait to get to work with Cathays Brass as permanent MD, and is excited to take the band into the New Year with lots of exciting projects in the pipeline. 12/11/2023 Conductor AppointmentSimon Hilberding is a recent addition to Welsh soil and someone who brings with him a wealth of experience from across the world. Having recently worked with the UAE armed forces and also having gained orchestral experience in Hannover and Sydney, Cathays look forward to discovering where this diverse background will take the group. After first meeting Simon in November, the band were impressed by his enthusiasm towards community music making and the relaxed style in which he encouraged progression during the rehearsal. The band is currently intending to re-start rehearsals with Simon on Monday January 10th (subject to Welsh government guidelines.) The band would also like to thank Matt Lush for creating their recent Ty Cerdd funded virtual project. At a time when regular activities were halted, having something to work towards over the summer period has helped players to stay in practice and keep engaged with our European friends. The results of this project can be viewed here The Music ReturnsOn Monday May 17th we were delighted to make a socially distanced return to music making. (Our first playing experience in 14 months.)
We'd like to say a big thank you to Cardiff University for helping us find a location which allows us to complies with government rules. All attenders are required to agree to our Method Statement and notify the committee of their intention to attend prior to rehearsal. Drop an email to [email protected] if you fancy joining us in some informal music making. Charity status grantedOn Nov 9th 2020 the Charity Commission formally recognised Cathays Brass as a Charity. (Charity Number: 1192241)
We've long believed in the power of community music and look forward to delivering our Objectives over the coming years. "TO ADVANCE, IMPROVE, DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN PUBLIC EDUCATION IN, AND APPRECIATION OF, THE ART AND SCIENCE OF TRADITIONAL AND MODERN BRASS MUSIC IN ALL ITS ASPECTS BY ANY MEANS THE TRUSTEES SEE FIT, INCLUDING THROUGH THE PRESENTATION OF PUBLIC CONCERTS AND RECITALS." Covid-19 UpdateIn accordance with government guidelines, the band are currently not rehearsing. Like the rest of the world we are monitoring the situation and longing for a time when we can make music together again.
In the meantime, we'd like to thank all the frontline workers and encourage people to stay safe. If you have been inspired during lockdown to pick up an instrument and start practicing why not drop us a message? We'd love to hear from you! Welcome to Neil!Since initially helping us out for one concert on Bass Trombone, the band have very much enjoyed meeting Neil as a player and more recently as a conductor.
We are now very pleased to welcome Neil into the band as our new Musical Director whilst he completes his studies in Cardiff as a Masters student of Brass Band conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Come and meet their enthusiastic members and help encourage the next stages of our Cities strong relationship by dancing your socks off at Cathays Sports and Social Club on Wednesday August 8th, 7:30pm.

Llangollen Results in for 2018 |
1st: BTM: Next Generation (Wales)
2nd: Cathays Brass (Wales) 3rd: 21 Strings Guzheng Ensemble (China) |
July 5th saw our second appearance at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.
A big congratulations go to this years victors, fellow Welsh entrants BTM: Next Generation, who produced an assured on stage performance which bodes well for the future of brass banding in Wales.
We were exceedingly pleased with our own performance and felt a noticeable progression from the previous year which drove us to continue our enjoyment at the festival. All performances are available to view at this link http://llangollen.tv/ensemble/
This year we also performed on the World stage and on the newly build centenary square on both Thursday and Friday.
Following our centenary square performance on Friday, the scorching weather gave us a quick break for a drink, then we were straight back out to enjoy the International Parade. Still with instruments to hand we ensured no quiet periods for the thousands of spectators as we inspired an impromptu singalong by striking up some traditional Welsh tunes.

Green Token Recognition
We're delighted to announce that we've been chosen to be part of Asda Coryton's Green Token scheme for July, August and September.
This means that when you shop in store over these three months you could additionally be helping us to bring music to Cathays. Just do your shop as normal, then at the checkout pick up the Green Tokens and put them in the Cathays Brass "shoot" on your way out.
The band would really appreciate your support with this, as all the money we receive goes straight into developing our skills and allows us to contribute to community activities.

Cathay's Charity Work Pays Off!
Our thanks goes to the Velindre Cancer Centre Fundraising team who allowed some of our members to visit them today and hand over a cheque for £600, money that we have been raising over the last year.
It was also great to catch one of our members, Carole Mellish, who coincidentally just finished her final ever shift at the centre. The band wishes her and Velindre Cancer Centre all the best for the future!
More info on the great work Velindre do can be found here.

Congratulations In Order
Congratulations to Christchurch United Church (Llanedeyrn) on reaching their 50th year and for marking it so successfully at their Jubilee Concert on Saturday September 2nd. It was a pleasure to be part of such a well run event and to share the stage with the spectacular Dowlais Make Choir was a great musical experience for all our members.
The concert was made extra special by the responsive and engaged audience, who through their generosity on the night were able to raise £964 for local charities!

All Stop for French Adventure
Good Luck to the 6 members (and MD) of Cathays Brass who will be teaming up with the Vale of Glamorgan Scratch Band as they travel to Fécamp over this coming weekend. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee these players will be back in time for Monday evenings rehearsal – (or indeed of any usefulness to anyone after all that “travelling”) and so due to this probable dent in attendance the rehearsal on 06.07.15 has been cancelled.

END OF AN ERA
Last month we received the unfortunate news that St Joseph’s Catholic Sports and Social Club would shortly be unable to continue opening on Monday evenings. A lot of consideration was given to changing our rehearsal night in order to remain at the club and the effects that this would have on our members. It is with some sadness that we felt changing our rehearsal night was not currently an option and so we have looked to secure a new rehearsal venue.
Our next rehearsal on 01.06.15 will take place in Cathays Sports and Social Club on Cathays Terrace (formally the Libs Club.) We hope this will be the first step in a new chapter of the bands history and are looking forward to meeting the club members on Monday.
Both the committee and members of St Josephs have always provided us with a great and supportive atmosphere to make music; from our regular Monday evening rehearsals to hosting our Launch Day back in October. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the club at future events and thank them for the great hospitality shown over the last 9 months.

CONCERT IN A DAY CHALLENGE
On Saturday 24th January, Cathays Brass will be teaming up with the Cardiff University Brass Band, to create our first Concert in a Day Challenge! There is an open invitation for any brass or percussion players to come and join us for this musical day as we create and perform a public concert from scratch.
The plan is to rehearse from 10am til’ 3pm, with coffee and lunch breaks, and then re-convene to play the rehearsed repertoire to a keen audience at 7.30pm. Both the rehearsal and concert will take place in the Sanctuary (top floor) of Cathays Methodist Church on Crwys Road.
Musical directors Martin Humphries, Andy Wareham and Elan Higueras have put together an exciting programme but will be keeping this under wraps until the day to keep it a surprise from players and audience alike. However, we can reveal that our guest soloist will be Matt Rowe, solo Euphonium of the Tongwynlais Temperance Band.

We will also be joined by local Welsh-speaking choir Aelwyd y Waun Ddyfal, who are conducted by Cardiff University Music student Steffan Hughes.
The band are very pleased to say that Domino's pizza have kindly sponsored our lunch break to keep all the musicians well sustained throughout the day!
We suggest that players arrive at the church at 9.30am (though it will be open from 8am for anyone super keen) for a pre-rehearsal cuppa, biscuit and chat. The baton will go down at 10am.
There is no need to register but in the interests of having enough pizza (and chairs/stands), please email [email protected] with your name, instrument and any dietary and/or mobility requirements (using ‘Concert in a Day’ as the subject). Dress for the concert will be all black (for players, not the audience).
For those who just want to come and watch, the concert will be FREE! With a retiring collection for The Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Charity, who support the new Children’s Hospital for Wales in Cardiff.
We look forward to seeing you there.

The band were extremely pleased to see the support we received on our very first fundraising night, with over 50 people taking part in the quiz. Congratulations go to the winners "We're blaming Tristan if we lose".
A special thanks from the band goes to The Heath Pub, who made the night possible, and for their generous raffle prize donations! Another thanks must go to all of those who came to support us, those of you who bought raffle tickers and those who gave us donations.
For a list of raffle prizes and winners please see our events page!
Thanks again and we hope to see you all very soon!!

We'd like to say a big thank you to Cardiff University for helping us find a location which allows us to comply with government rules.
All attenders are now required to agree to our Method Statement and notify the committee of their intention to attend prior to rehearsal. Drop an email to [email protected] if you fancy joining us in some social music making.
